“Being busy is a form of laziness — lazy thinking and indiscriminate action.” Tim Ferriss
“How are things?” We get asked this question all the time.
At the start of meetings.
On calls.
In passing conversations.
If, like me, almost without thinking, the answer coming back from your mouth will be: “Yeah, good. Busy.”
It sounds positive.
It sounds like progress.
And it’s rarely questioned.
Tim Grover
I was reading an article about Tim Grover recently. If you are unfamiliar with him, Tim Grover is a renowned American performance coach, author, and founder of Attack Athletics. He is also most famous for training the best of the best NBA legends, including Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
The article explained that when he worked with top athletes, he noticed something interesting and consistent.
The players who trained the longest weren’t always the ones who improved the most.
In fact, the opposite was often true.
The best performers weren’t the busiest.
They were the most focused.
They did less, but with precision, intent, and structure.
The activity looked impressive.
However, it wasn’t what drove the real results.
It’s not that different in business.
Busy covers a lot.
It can have positive meanings:
- Momentum
- Growth
- Progress
But it can also cover:
- Everything feeling reactive
- Time feeling constantly stretched
- A sense of carrying way more than you should
The two sound the same, but feel very different.
Heading into May
The days are getting longer.
The weather’s turning.
Football seasons are wrapping up.
People are starting to take holidays.
There’s a real natural sense that the year is moving.
And with that comes a quieter question underneath it all: “How are things? Really”
Whether you’ve stopped to look at it or not, you’re approaching the halfway point of the year.
And this is usually where the signal becomes clearer.
Not just in the numbers, but beyond that in how the business feels to run.
So instead of the usual answer, try this:
Pause for a moment and ask yourself properly:
- Are you working more hours now than you were at the start of the year?
- Does your day feel planned, or constantly interrupted?
- Do you have sufficient time to think and plan or only time to react?
- Has growth made things feel simpler or more complicated?
Honest Assessment
If you’re honest with those answers, something tends to emerge.
Not a crisis in itself, but a real pattern.
Most business owners I speak to at this stage say some version of: “We’re really busy, the activity is there… but something feels off.”
And that’s the moment worth paying attention to.
That’s what we’re going to explore this month.
Not how to do more.
Not how to push harder.
But, why do so many businesses reach this point where they’re busy, active, growing and yet not really scaling.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll break this down:
- Why everything still seems to run through you
- Why more work often creates more pressure
- Why hiring doesn’t fix it (and often makes it worse)
- And what actually needs to change for growth to feel easier again
Final Thought
Next time someone asks “How are things?” you’ll probably still say: “Yeah… busy.”
However, at least now, you’ll know whether that’s a good thing.
